Living in a culture so different from the South Asian culture you were brought up in can be very confusing, intimidating and conflictual.
-
Have you recently emigrated and find yourself isolated in your home?
-
Have you just had a baby and feel sad, stressed and are crying all the time?
-
Do you have difficulty expressing your thoughts, opinions and disagreements with your Supervisor?
-
Do you find your co-workers treat you differently because of your culture?
-
Are you parents "sandwiched" in the middle between your children who relate more to the western culture and your parents/in laws who relate more to traditional South Asian customs?
-
Are you having difficulty communicating with your spouse? Are you having difficulty accepting your spouse's traditional/non-traditional expectations in the marriage?
-
Are you a woman who is having difficulty relating to your spouse's family because of your different values and beliefs?
As an Asian Indian, I have spent all of my life growing up outside of India. But all of these places (like Wembley in the UK and Chicago, New Jersey and now near Plano in the US) had and still have large South Asian communities. Living with traditional Indian parents in these communities, I learned about our culture and the importance of education and marriage and the roles and expectations for girls, boys, men and women.
In my social work education, I learned about depression and anxiety amongst other mental health issues and how these can be treated with psychotherapy and sometimes medications. Unfortunately, I also saw how people in the community often suffered in silence, sometimes to the point of suicide, too fearful of the consequences of seeking treatment.
Committing to treatment is difficult sometimes.....
I always offer a complimentary 30 minute consultation for all new clientele. Call me at (469) 854 1656 for a private and confidential phone consultation or schedule it in-office in my two convenient locations in Allen and Plano,TX.
