The Math Just Doesn’t ADD Up!

If I was to say 2+2 is 7, you would probably wonder where I went to school!

However, if we look at a similar equation when it comes to weight management:

Eat less + exercise more = successful long term weight management

This also doesn’t add up (at least not for most people!). There are so many other parts to that same equation that we do not address.

Goals of the Non-Diet Approach:

  • SHIFT YOUR THINKING FROM DIETING TO HEALTH MANAGEMENT
  • FOCUS ON A LIFESTYLE WHERE YOUR MOOD IS NOT AFFECTED BY YOUR WEIGHT AND SIZE BUT WHERE YOU TRUST AND ENJOY FOOD, MOVE YOUR BODY AND TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF IN A PLEASURABLE WAY THAT SUPPORTS HEALTH.

How do you know if you would benefit from the Non-Diet Approach?

Do you feel uncomfortable or fearful around food?

Do you feel out of touch with your hunger and satiety cues?

Do you have a chronic history of unsuccessful attempts to lose weight and following restrictive diets?

Do you eat compulsively, binge eat or restrict food?

Does your mood change based on your weight?

Do you start and stop different exercise regimens?

Do you let your weight determine your mood and how you feel about yourself?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you can benefit from this approach.

The Non-Diet approach helps to identify the missing parts to your equation and work through them. You will learn to:

  1. Identify  your health and lifestyle goals
  2. Identify the steps you need to take to move towards those goals
  3. Understand that weight loss is not the only road to health
  4. Trust and enjoy food by tuning into hunger and satiety signals
  5. Allow your body to settle at a weight that is comfortable, supports your health goals and is easy to maintain
  6. Identify all movement and self-care activities that are pleasurable and nurturing
  7. Accept and understand that a large person can be healthy, fit and fat at the same time
  8. Accept that despite our cultural norms, our bodies come in all shapes and sizes and are beautiful!
  9. Understand that self acceptance, self respect and self esteem are essential no matter what size, weight and shape your body is

Some individuals may be at a weight or have an eating style that threatens their state of health. Further consultation with the client and other health care providers is needed to determine a plan that moves the client away from the threat and minimize the risk of deprivation driven eating and exercise resistance that is associated with traditional dieting and exercising methods.
